Lent:  GOD FOR US
Focus 1:  GOD FOR ME |   FEBRUARY 22- MARCH 3
Christ looks at you and me and he sees the Spirit alive and at work in his temple.  He sees beyond the cross branded into our sin and struggle and sees the joy of what God's love has made, is making, and will make in us.  Jesus knows our darkness and our weakness better than we do.  he is not surprised by it.  He is not dissuaded.  His love does not flicker for an instant, but shines all the brighter.  Starting on Ash Wednesday, we will consider how the cross conveys God's intimate identification with us all - how he treasures each of us as unique, beloved children.

Focus 2:  GOD FOR MY NEIGHBOR |  MARCH 4-17
Chris, in his death, identifies with the abused and the afflicted;  the beaten and the broken; the cursed and the captive.  this Lent, we want to focus on Christ's solidarity with vulnerable children in our city.  Jesus is the vulnerable child:  the Son of God, abused, rejected, forsaken, so that we can be adopted, welcomed, embraced into the family and household of God.  Through the cross, Jesus identifies with vulnerable children in our city and calls us as his people to embody his redemptive presence in their lives.  From March 4-17, we will be highlighting opportunities to learn about, pray for and practically serve Portland's vulnerable children in areas like sex-trafficking, foster care and adoption.

Focus 3: GOD FOR THE WORLD | MARCH 18-31
Christ stand in solidarity with the hungry and the hurting, the poor and the persecuted, the diseased and the downtrodden.  This Lent, we want to focus on Christ's identification with those in our world who live simply with less food, material wealth and security nets than most of us are accustomed to.  Through the cross, Christ not only stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world, he calls us to stand there with him.  From March 18-31, you are invited to a 2-week fast on a simple diet of rice and beans (what many of our brothers and sisters live on), as a means of focusing our heart and attention on Christ, on our brothers and sisters around the world, and in prayer for Christ's transformation to heal the places of our world where destruction and death currently reign.  After these three movements we will arrive at HOLY WEEK | APRIL 1-8
