Dear Don, I was a visitor at the church this last weekend and heard your sermon....first off, I am a brother in Christ. Love your books etc...they have given me much to think about in terms of being a Christian does not mean you are a republican also or a democrat also for that matter. Just a comment on the sermon....you were talking about story, you were talking about ambition. Something I noticed is that there was no connection to the ultimate story, the gospel message. The ultimate character in most awesome of plots. And when you talk about ambition...wouldn't hurt to mention Jesus's ambition, what an example of what it looks like.....I am hoping this is what you were eluding to anyway, because without that story, we are just critics of each other, going no where......
DON: I loved the movie Adaptation. I love that Cage's character went to the McKee seminar even though seminars were against everything he believed in as a writer, and it turned out to really help him. Not long after I saw that movie, I started "Searching For God Knows What" and sorta tripped out on the FINE WINE chapter...wierd. But that's not what I want to comment about.
I have got a pretty exciting story. In fact, my story is so exciting right now that it's being supervised by Imago elders and leaders and a Care Team. My story right now is FULL of conflict and the characters are definately going through hell. But after hearing this sermon I decided that I LOVE MY STORY. Sure, it sucks and it's super hard, but it's the makings of a good one, and I know more than ever that God has the pen and is writing this sucker. You shared James 1.2-4 which reminded me that I want to be mature and complete, not lacking in anything! And you shared Joseph's story, which is in the Bible because it IS God's story. Jesus is the Word become flesh, so Joseph's story IS the Gospel. I was greatly encouraged by this sermon...
Tell Miller I took Robert McKee's seminar in Santa Monica 14 years ago. There were a bunch of stars and heavy hitter writers and disney execs and me the guy who was writing the "Ernest" movies (KnoWhutIMean, Vern?) Diane Keaton was sitting next to me and I could not even speak. McKee is such a great storyteller that we were spellbound for three days 10 hours a day. The last day he took us through "Casablanca" scene by scene, spelling out story structure. Six hours later he closed the weekend by saying, "It all gets down to this.." Then he sang the song from "Casablanca"..."A kiss is just a kiss, a sign is just sigh.." The whole class wept and gave him a standing ovation. A good story, told well that takes us closer to the truth. You got to go hear him tell the story of stories. How can I find the "Jenna" you mentioned with Bloodwater, the wells mission that you mentioned. I live just outside Nashville. I'd like to help her. It's a good story.

Love to all of you. I love that part of His Body that you are. DanielB
